Energy Industry Fundamentals (EIF) Workshop 2012

Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions

The Energy Industry Fundamentals workshop is a two-day fall graduate student symposium aimed at students who are interested in pursuing an energy industry career. This year's EIF provided an introduction to key energy issues, terms and trends. It was led by key Duke faculty and experts in energy economics, policy, business and technology, and included presentations, discussions and a networking dinner.

The event, held August 30-31, 2012, was open to all Duke graduate students. Some of the topics covered included oil and gas, renewable energy, project finance, international development and the electricity grid.

Richard Newell, former head of the US Energy Information Administration and director of the Duke Energy Initiative, also shared his perspective on international energy use, noting that global energy is challenged not so much by scarce resources – we have plenty of oil, gas and other fuels for the foreseeable future - but by whether the environment can handle our use of those resources.

In addition to sessions led by Duke faculty, the EIF also hosted a reception featuring David Brewster, a Duke alumni who is now CEO of the innovative energy company EnerNOC.
