Crossing boundaries to meet the needs of our energy future

The Duke University Energy Initiative has merged with the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions to create a new organization: the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability. Working closely with Duke University schools and other units, the merged institute advances the university’s mission to build a more sustainable world by developing transformative educational experiences; galvanizing and conducting impactful research; and engaging with key decision makers at the global, national, state, and local levels. A new website is under development. Learn more about the merger.

The Duke University Energy Initiative is a university-wide interdisciplinary collaboration focused on advancing an accessible, affordable, reliable, and clean energy system.

The Energy Initiative reaches across business, engineering, environment, law, policy, and the arts and sciences to educate tomorrow’s energy innovators, develop new solutions through research, and improve energy decisions by engaging business and government leaders.

It requires seeing the whole energy picture, not just the parts, and performing innovative research to increase understanding and open new possibilities.

The Energy Initiative is one of Duke’s signature interdisciplinary initiatives, a tangible expression of the university’s commitment to interdisciplinary approaches for bringing knowledge to the service of society. The Energy Initiative is organized through the Office of the Provost, and integrates the distinctive assets of six schools: Fuqua School of Business, Pratt School of Engineering, Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke Law School, Sanford School of Public Policy, and Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.
