John Hanger on "The Truth and Nothing but the Truth about Gas Drilling and America's Energy Choices"

John Hanger is a nationally recognized expert on environment, energy, gas drilling and green economy issues who has unique experience in government and in the private sector. He is one of two Pennsylvanians who have served both as a Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection and as a Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. Shalini Vajjhala, Special Representative, Office of the Administrator, US Environmental Protection Agency

Shalini Vajjhala was appointed to the position of Special Representative in the Office of Administrator Lisa Jackson in November 2011. In this position, Dr. Vajjhala leads the US-Brazil Joint Initiative on Urban Sustainability (JIUS), a bilateral partnership announced by President Obama and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in March of 2010. The JIUS is charged with catalyzing transformational investment in green and smart infrastructure, technology, products and services, especially for poor and underserved urban communities, and demonstrating how environmental protection can serve as a driver for economic growth and job creation in building the greener economies and smarter cities of the future. This event was co-sponsored by Student International Discussion Group (SIDG) and is part of its annual symposium. This year's symposium focused on "Water and Energy:Improving Access Through Small Scale Solutions".
Lloyd Yates, President and CEO, Progress Energy Carolinas:"Power Options from Coal to Gas"

Lloyd Yates is president and chief executive officer for Progress Energy Carolinas. He has more than 28 years of experience in the energy business including nuclear and fossil generation and energy delivery. He came to Progress Energy predecessor Carolina Power & Light in 1998, and served for five years in the role of vice president for Fossil Generation. Before joining Progress Energy, he worked for PECO Energy for 16 years in several line operations and management positions.
Steven Koonin on "Addressing America's Energy Challenges"

Amory B. Lovins "Reinventing Fire"

Amory B. Lovins, spoke on his new book, "Reinventing Fire: Bold Business Solutions for the New Energy Era." Amory is the co-founder, chairman and chief scientist of Rocky Mountain Institute, a independent entrepreneurial nonprofit think-tank. Amory is a consultant, experimental physicist and 1993 MacArthur Fellow who has been active at the nexus of energy, resources, environment, development, and security in more than 50 countries for 35 years, including 14 years based in England. He is widely considered among the world’s leading authorities on energy—especially its efficient use and sustainable supply—and a fertile innovator in integrative design.

Michael Byers "Who Owns the Arctic's Oil?"

Dr. Michael Byers holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia. Prior to 2005, he was Professor of Law and Director of Canadian Studies at Duke University; from 1996-1999 he was a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford University. Michael is a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and Ottawa Citizen, and a frequent guest on the CBC, CTV and Global. His most recent book is "Who Owns the Arctic?" Reception followed. This event was co-sponsored by the Duke Center for Canadian Studies.
